Sonal Madala: Week 11: The Power of Social Media
We have all heard about the negatives and positives of social media. But do the positives truly outweigh the negatives? Who do they benefit? In the digital age, social media has become an essential part of our daily lives, influencing the way we connect, share, and communicate.
Social media has revolutionized how we connect with people globally, allowing individuals to forge friendships, collaborate on projects, and share experiences with others from different corners of the world. Social media also serves as a powerful tool for news, educational content, and important updates since they can be shared instantly, contributing to a more informed and socially conscious society. Additionally, it provides a platform to empower individuals to express themselves creatively. Social media enables the formation of communities centered around common interests, causes, or experiences.
However, social media has a rising concern regarding the prevalence of cyberbullying and harassment. Anonymity can embolden individuals to engage in harmful behavior, impacting the mental health and well-being of victims. The collection and use of personal data on social media have raised significant privacy concerns. Social media is susceptible to the rapid spread of fake news and misinformation. Excessive use of social media has been linked to addiction and various mental health issues, including anxiety and depression.
Social media is a double-edged sword. While it enhances global connectivity, provides valuable information, and facilitates creative expression, it also poses risks to privacy, mental health, and societal well-being. Finding a balance between the way one takes advantage of social media and how social media takes advantage of the individual is crucial to having a healthy relationship with the online world.
Hi Sonal. I understand what you mean by social media and the increased use of technology having a negative effect on the minds of our youth and even our own productivity. Recently, I have been hearing it a lot from my friends and family who are engaged in the school system that modern-day children, or “IPad kids” have really regressed when it comes to their education. Maybe as a simultaneous result of the pandemic which helped younger kids build a stronger dependence on tech or just more accessible ways of finding and having work done for them with the use of AI, but the reliance on tech by the youth is rather frightening. Nowadays children in 5th grade are operating at a level of a 2nd to 3rd grader. If you think about this in the long term, by the time these kids are in high school they will be severely behind which is almost a stark contrast to how competitive each succeeding generation of our school has become. Even, I see the effects of reliance on social media. Reaching for a phone and doom-scrolling without even realizing it or having to have a video simultaneously playing while I do some homework just to have some background noise. I think that while tech is pretty helpful overall, our increasing reliance on it will really be our downfall in society.
ReplyDeleteHi Sonal, I agree with what you said as social media for all its benefits has just as many issues. Cyberbullying, as you stated, is a huge issue that has gotten prevalent in recent years. Cyberbullying has been the more prominent form of bullying and has dangerous effects such as suicide or depression. Social media is such a huge part of our lives, especially for teenagers who just happen to be the people most affected by cyberbullying. Social media provides us the ability to reach out and communicate with people through devices but some people use this to harm others rather than help. Overall, your blog was insightful and I believe cyberbullying awareness is needed to prevent future problems. The lack of awareness adults have about cyberbullying is a growing issue that needs to be stopped.
