Rushil Week #9: Power of Money
Money controls our lives. Or, as John Kander put it, “Money makes the world go round.” If you think about it, our entire goal in life is centered around money. The casual route of life is to go to school, graduate with a degree, and somehow positively impact society. However, without money, we wouldn’t be able to afford the education that would allow us to create that impact. When you look closer, it’s disturbing how money can change our lives. Around 65% of working Americans live paycheck to paycheck, with some earning over 6 figures annually. As if finding jobs wasn’t a hard enough task, people are struggling to survive even with a job.
In the summer, I got a job at a place that I still work at to this day. Even at 16, my pursuit of money plagued my way of thinking. Researching other studies, I realized that I needed to start earning money now to be able to even afford my college education. I worked 40 hours a week and tried to make as much money as I could, effectively using up all of my summertime. It can be thought of as time well spent, however looking back, I wish I could have that time back. I realized that if this is happening to me, it's happening to so many people around the world. Now think of how this impacts adults with families and responsibilities. Seems difficult, right?
My point is that money, while necessary for our society to function, has also negatively impacted our society at the same time. I see my coworkers struggle and live paycheck to paycheck while simultaneously dealing with personal issues. I don’t have a solution for this, and I don’t think there will be one anytime soon; but if there is one thing this world needs, it’s equal distribution of resources and opportunities. This would create a society where people can lead accomplished lives without the burden of financial struggle.
Rushil, your take on money and how it drives the world is truly insightful. If you think about it, we are spending money to be given the opportunity to earn more money. It is a never ending cycle that will ultimately drive our lives until the very end. It is impossible to escape this pattern of money. Similarly to you, I also have a job as a result of my newfound desire for money towards my college tuition. We require money to earn better opportunities at jobs that give us more money. After every summer break, I get the feeling that I wasted valuable time and opportunities that I could've spent elsewhere that would be more beneficial for me. However, at the end of the day, these worries are useless and we cannot go back in time. Overall, your blog truly got me thinking about the concept of money and I enjoyed reading and responding to it.
